Distributed Leadership Approach

The main purpose of school leadership is to foster students learning so, it is expected that school leaders should have the vision to enhance the quality of teaching-learning processes and practices of his/her school.

For that he/she should manage the instructional processes, guide all the teachers, collaborate with them and ensure the learning of the students by using his/her own professional expertise in teaching.

It is also true that in addition to leading the teaching-learning process the headmaster, have so many other responsibilities like the discipline of the students,  security, and maintenance of the school building, accounting, updating the school records, and presenting them to the authorities from time to time and so on.

In short Many tasks and administrative responsibilities have to be fulfilled by the headmaster. So, headmasters or principals often do not have time to shift from administrative work to teaching-learning.

Some principals believe that teaching-learning is the responsibility of teachers and that we only want to evaluate their teaching work by supervising it.

But when we look the word headmaster or principal, it indicates headmaster is headteacher or principal is prime teacher so that his/her main role is teaching, he/she is not an administrator, he is the head among the teachers. Therefore, the main responsibility of the headmaster is the teaching and to ensure the learning of the students, and then the other administrative responsibilities are actually secondary. These additional responsibilities cannot be an obstacle in the way of fulfilling the main role, in fact, it would not be appropriate to give such an excuse.

So, the question is, does the headmaster want to teach in every classroom? And how will he be able to do that? And its answer is no instead of direct teaching he/she should lead the teaching-learning process of school. he/she can follow the distributed leadership approach.

Now the question is what is Distributed Leadership?

Here in this visualization, you can see the main four dimensions of distributed leadership practice.

It is an approach to working with individuals with trust, transparency and respect for each other’s contributions.

In this approach, every individual of the organization from principal to peon and watchmen works with trust and respect for each other’s contributions to the organization.

It requires such an Attitude like everyone in the organization is an important source of knowledge, experience, and wisdom. Here we have to keep in mind it is not a management technique.

This approach and attitude make such organizational Culture and environment, where people work with a shared purpose, teamwork, and respect and where everyone is responsible and accountable for leadership in his/her area of assigned work.

In short Distributed leadership is primarily concerned with the practice of leadership (Approach, attitude, culture and environment) rather than specific leadership roles or responsibilities. It equates with shared, collective and extended leadership practice that builds the capacity for change and improvement.

Why Distributed Leadership?

  • As I already mentioned, School Headmasters cannot be available everywhere at every time.
  • Also, in this approach, everyone feels free to develop and share new ideas. Basically, the school is an exploration centre, not an industrial establishment.
  • It Supports and strengthens outstanding individuals within the organization and it is an important feature of a learning organization, distributed leadership approach
  • Helpful in re-culturing the organization, and most importantly It Helpful in improving human relations in school.

Here I highlighting some Principles of Distributed Leadership

  • Distributed Leadership does not mean delegating. Instead, it means finding the best path by tapping the expertise, ideas, and efforts of everyone involved.
  • Distributed Leadership brings success in handling problems, threats, and change. It not only encourages idea-sharing; it demands it.
  • “The way we’ve always done things” isn’t necessarily the best way. Using Distributed Leadership, we can look for better ways.
  • In a Distributed Leadership environment, mistakes often lead to discovering valuable new approaches.
  • In Distributed Leadership, not everyone is a decision-maker, but everyone is an expert whose knowledge contributes to the decision-making process.
  • Distributed Leadership is about cooperation and trust, not about competition among units and factions. Same mission is shared, even though it is contributed in different ways.
  • Distributed Leadership empowers everyone to make his or her job more efficient meaningful, and effective.
  • Under Distributed Leadership, everybody matters.
  • Distributed leadership is primarily concerned with mobilizing leadership at all levels in the organisation not just relying on leadership from the top. It is about engaging the many rather than the few in leadership activity within the school and actively distributing leadership practice.
  • A distributed model of leadership is one premised upon the interactions between many leaders rather than the actions of an individual leader.

The emphasis here is about leadership practice and not leadership functions.

These types of instructional leadership teams can drive positive change throughout a school.

Distributed leadership is not about dividing tasks and responsibilities among individuals. Instead, DL is concerned with the interactions among individuals (leaders and those whom they lead) to drive instructional improvement and improved student outcomes through the development of high-quality teaching and a culture where all students can thrive.

Distributed leadership does not mean that everybody leads but everyone is an expert whose knowledge can be used in the decision-making process.

Principals and assistant principals are critical to enabling and sustaining the work of DL teams. They do this by building the leadership capacity in the school and by creating the conditions where expertise can be spread across the school so that everyone can work individually and collectively to improve outcomes for students.

Friends, we have to remember as leader of teaching-learning, it is an organisational condition rather than a set of personal qualities.

Taking a distributed perspective on leadership means that it is grounded in activity rather than in position or role.

For example: mutual enquiry, dialogue, partnership, learning from each other’s through the staff academy, etc..

In very practical terms it will require the creation of the internal conditions where it can thrive. It will necessitate the creation of time, space and opportunity for groups to meet, plan and reflect.

So, follow the distributed leadership practice in your school and lead the learning process successfully.
